Choosing your attendents….

Article Posted: 27 February 2006

You've decided you'd like a bridal party, but who do you choose? You've got sisters, cousins, childhood friends and new girlfriends. You can't possibly have them all, but deciding is very difficult. Here are a few options and advice on how to make them work best for you.

Bridesmaids and Ushers You want to have six bridesmaids (as you really must!) but your fiancé only wants four ushers. That's okay, you do not have to have the same number of attendants. Just make sure that there is one usher per 50 guests, to avoid seating delays. In the recessional, two of the ushers can escort a bridesmaid on each arm.

Sisters – You love both of your sisters dearly, but can't decide which one to ask to be your maid of honour. Don't despair, you can have them both as your honour attendants. Divide up their duties and have them both stand up with you during the ceremony.

Your fiance's sisters Unless you are particularly close, it is not mandatory to ask them.

Your older sister or your best friend as your maid of honour You are very close to your girlfriend, but your parents are pressuring you to have your sister fulfil the role. She is quite a bit older than you and already married, so she could serve as your matron of honour and your best friend as maid of honour. Perhaps ask your best friend for more help and advice as you have similar tastes. Another option is to only have your best friend as your attendant, and have your sister read a piece of poetry during the ceremony.

Your best friend is a guy Today's society is pretty easy going and open minded (but try not to offend any of your older family members!) Call him your honour attendant, but don't expect him to wear that lacy lavender outfit you have chosen for your other attendants. Put him in the same style outfit as the groomsmen.
