Your Wedding Cake

Article Posted: 27 March 2006

Fortunately, the days have past when the groom would break a thin loaf over the bride's head. In a Roman times this was believed to be a symbol of fertility. The guests would rush around collecting the crumbs in the hope that they too would receive such fortune.

In Australia it's tradition to cut the cake and toast the newly weds. Your wedding cake should be individually designed to match your own personal style and taste (no pun intended!) as well as the wedding décor and colour scheme.

Having trouble choosing a flavour for your cake? The traditional fruitcake is still a very popular choose. And it's not likely that any of your guests are going to complain about a chocolate mud cake! You could also choose a multi-flavoured cake. They come in so many yummy varieties from vanilla to butterscotch, marble, lemon, carrot and even cheesecake. The fillings get even more tempting with raspberry, coconut, strawberry, mocha and white chocolate cream.

The wedding cake is usually cut into small slices and packaged into small bags for the guest to take home. Another option is to serve you cake as a dessert. It will cost extra for a larger cake but this is offset by reducing your catering bill in the dessert cost. You may also wish to keep the top layer of your cake for your first anniversary or the birth of your first child.
You should start looking for a wedding cake specialist about three months before your wedding day. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Enquire into whether the cake will be baked fresh or frozen, and whether it will be custom-made. Don't forget to test the cake for yourself by asking for a sample.

Round and square shaped cakes are still popular, but you can have any shape you like. The decorations for your cake are a way of ensuring it is distinct to your wedding. Most cakes are decorated with flowers made of icing or silk. Your cake maker will provide both of these. Another option is fresh flowers, these will need to be ordered from your cake decorator. There are countless designs for wedding cakes. To choose your design look through as many books and magazines as you can.

The wedding cake is an important feature of the reception, and should be displayed where all guests can see it. The MC will announce the cutting of the cake, usually after the toasts and speeches are completed but before coffee is served. To cut the cake, you should use a decorated knife. Let your groom put his right hand over yours, and cut the first wedge of cake together. Tradition dictates that you share the first piece together.
