Civil Ceremony
While you have a great variety of musical instruments to choose from, they should blend in with the time and location. A single flautist at a morning garden wedding can be delightful, or during an evening service, you may want a solo singer to croon some love songs to a guitar or piano accompaniment.
You can be a little more flexible about what is played and when, throughout the ceremony. If it is only a small gathering, then taped music is all you need. However, you will probably require someone to co-ordinate the timing.
Most churches have their own organists, who have a fairly wide range of traditional and modern tunes in their repertoires. Some churches have a ban on certain types of modern music, so talk over your choices with the clergyman first, then the organist. Together, you should be able to draw up a personalised and musically memorable ceremony.
The organist, if not the choir should be available for the rehearsal. The organist and the choir will have to be paid so discuss fees at the same time as you discuss music.
The Reception
Really, anything goes – from classical to rock and ethnic. Live music may be a jazz band, bush band or a 20-piece orchestra. Or you can decide on a mobile disco with a DJ, and select your favorite songs prior to the event. Making sure that the DJ has your bridal waltz track.
While hiring live performers, keep in mind the following points:
Make sure you hear them play before committing yourself, whether it is live or taped.
Ask how long they play and how many breaks they take.
Discuss with them what they will wear.
Ask whether they charge a flat fee for a specified time, or by the hour.
Do they need power outlets?
How much room do they need for their equipment?
Can they play your favorites?
If you are hiring more than one performer, make sure that they have either worked together previously, or will agree to a rehearsal before your wedding night.
If you want your guests to be able to dance, make sure there is enough space at the reception venue, not only for the band but also for the guests to throw themselves into the full swing of things. If you are not sure where to start in selecting wedding music, it is possible to buy CD's of musical selections specially chosen for weddings. This could be a great starting point for a small cost.
