The Ceremony

Article Posted: 28 September 2006

The ceremony is the key element of your wedding day, and there are many ways to make it unique. Firstly, you need to decide on the type of Ceremony you want – Religious, Celebrant or Registry Office.

 Religious Ceremonies

If you are looking to get married in a Church, find the appropriate one and book it ASAP, as they can book up very quickly. If it is going to be a religious ceremony, you may be required to attend some services or a marriage course prior to the Wedding. Religious ceremonies generally begin with music for the processional, followed by a hymn. The minister then says a few words about the holiness of marriage and the couple take their vows and exchange rings. A hymn is sung, followed be bible readings, an address, the signing of the register and music for the processional.

 Civil Ceremonies

48% of Australians marry in a civil ceremony, allowing them to marry in any location. Your celebrant will offer suggestions about readings and vows that may be appropriate for your ceremony. Celebrants generally like to be contacted about 6 months prior to the Wedding Date.

It is a legal requirement to lodge a 'Notice of Intended Marriage' form at least one month and one day before the Wedding. You must also provide proof of identity, age and, if necessary, dissolution of previous marriages. Church and celebrant fees vary, so ask about costs in advance. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the person performing the ceremony, it can make a huge difference to the overall feel of the ceremony.  When choosing the location of your ceremony, consider guest numbers, accessibility, and distance to travel, parking, bad weather, and comfort of your guests.

REMEMBER: That the Ceremony is the centerpiece of your Wedding, without it there would not be one. Your ceremony should reflect the commitment that you have made to each other.
