Hiring a Wedding Planner

Article Posted: 3 March 2007

Wondering what a wedding planner can do for you?
Consider this:

They've been there, done that
Planners know what it takes to run your big day. You have to become an expert – quickly – in everything from flowers to food, whereas they're already experts. Moreover, they have probably already planned weddings at the church/reception site you're holding yours at, and are familiar with all its little problems – and how to overcome them.

They can actually save you money
Because Planners have long-standing relationships with vendors and assorted wedding people – including photographers, florists and limo drivers – they are often privy to discounts that you might not get on your own. Even better, they know who you should use and who you should avoid – it's a small industry, and they know every in and out. That way, you're saved loads of hassle – you can rest assured that everyone you're dealing with is reliable, and if something goes wrong, there's a back-up plan.

They can definitely save you time
There's lots of running around when you're organising a wedding – and not just because there are a million people you need to see. You're also starting from scratch – meeting with various florists/caterers/photographers to see what they're like. A planner can help you cut to the chase, giving you a short list of who you should see based on your tastes. Also, if you don't have time to go to whoop-whoop during your lunch hour – they can do that, too.

They can deal with things going wrong
When disaster strikes, brides panic. ("What do you mean by drunken ex-uncle has decided to show up at the church and has already been sick behind the back seats?") Not so wedding planners. We can assure you it no no problem that you wedding happens to fall on Grand Prix weekend in Melbourne – we have promptly arranged hotel accommodation for 50 out-of-town guests when all the hotels were supposedly booked out (we also arranged buses to get to the wedding).

Other elements to think about
For those of you who don't want to have a standard, typical wedding, a planner an suggest exciting ideas within your budget. They will know what works and what doesn't, and can help you create the wedding of your dreams. They'll likely know a lot about everything, from gowns to accessories to invitation seals to place settings.

A  planner is also a godsend for anyone with a demanding job that simply can't afford to take time off work, and needs someone else to organise those details. Mothers-of-the-bride are a great help, but often can't manage the demands of a wedding alone.

On the actual day, the planner will have a running sheet – a timetable of what's supposed to happen and when – and will do all those tedious things for you, like make sure the limo driver is on time and then deal with those people who aren't.

The one thing you want to make sure of is that you hire an experienced consultant who, like everyone else associated with your wedding, comes with lengthy recommendations and impressive events behind them. If they have done loads of parties but no weddings, you may want to think about it long and hard. That doesn't mean they are not equipped to handle your wedding, just that you should both know what you're getting into.

But what if you can't afford one? Don't stress. Often, the caterer takes charge of the running of events on the day, and co-ordinates with whomever's in charge of the music. Most of the people you'll hire will be professionals - they've been there, done that. Many brides get married without the help of anyone - including family or friends - and do just fine. It's all a matter of how organised you are, and how much you want to spend/stress on your wedding. Hiring a wedding planner isn't essential - it can just be a big help.

Cost of the consultant
Consultants start at about $1000 and can go up to $5000, depending on what you're asking them to do. Most will have an initial meeting with you for free, and can draw you up a plan based on that meeting – so you'll be able to see exactly what they can do for you.

As mentioned before, a wedding consultant isn't only for the rich – due to the fact that they can get discounts, your overall wedding cost may be actually cheaper with a consultant than without one, depending on who you use and how exclusive the services are.

It's all about finding someone who understands your taste, and can help build your vision into a reality.
