Melbourne's inner areas are graced by spacious parks and street upon street of elegant and well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian architecture, contracting strongly with modern tower blocks. It is renowned also for its retail shopping, theatres, restaurants, cultural festivals and Australian Rules Football.

The weather can be unpredictable in Victoria, particularly along the coastal regions. Despite its rather volatile weather, the State enjoys a generally temperate climate. The road system is good and penetrates most areas; as a result much of the State can be reached easily in a day's driving.

Each of Victoria's five main geographical regions has its own special attraction. The central and western districts, due north and west of Melbourne, offer highlights including the historic gold-rush areas, with well-preserved, attractive towns such as Bendigo, Castlemaine and Ballarat, the popular spa towns of Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, and the Grampians, a beautiful national park, particularly noted for its spring wild-flowers. No exploration of this region would be complete without a drive along the aptly named Great Ocean Road , which runs for 320 kilometres along the dramatic south-west coast.

The north-east high-country region has equally magnificent scenery and is dotted with winter ski resorts. Gippsland stretches to the south-east; it contains some of the State's most beautiful and varied country. Rolling pastures lead to densely wooded hill country, still relatively unpopulated and peaceful.
